Along with the great surge interest of the people with bass fishing in the entire state, comes another kind of freshwater fishing which needs vigorous physical strength, open yourself to the interesting world of peacock bass fishing.

A peacock bass is actually from the cichlids family of fish not from the bass family, though it resembles that of a largemouth bass. It would normally have waylaid attacks to a piteous and unwary victim from a knothole and show his insatiable desire for food. It would just take hold of a very puny prey from afar and would eat it voraciously as if it hadn’t taken any food for years.

On the other hand, unlike its North American counterpart, the peacock bass is a lot more eye-appealing and vibrantly decorated with the various shades of green, blue, orange and gold. But we should not be taken in to these dazzling façade because, as a matter of fact, they are far more aggressive than the largemouths that they can even shatter the rods or destroy the tackle that would already be enough to restrain the toughest of the largemouth.

One more difference which can be observed is that the largest among largemouth are always the female while in peacock bass, either the male or the female can grow to a large portion.

The peacock bass, which is known as pavon in Venezuela and Columbia and tucunare in Brazil and Peru, is generally categorized into four distinct species: (a) the speckled peacock, (b) the peacock pavon or tucunare, (c) the butterfly peacock, and (d) the royal peacock, but fish biologists still suggest that various other types may actually be present to the whole of South America

It may have acquired its name from the fact that the spot—a black circular “eye spot” which is notably rimmed in gold--on the base of the caudal fin which bears a close resemblance to the tail plume of a peacock fowl.

Male peacocks are normally described to have a well-known hump on their head which is used as a battering ram in battles with other males and to protect the fry and their territory as well. Some believe that the hump may be a fat deposit that the male peacock uses to nourish himself when he is not feeding on fry.

It should be well-noted that before we indulge ourselves with the activity we should prepare everything that would be needed at first. We can log on to the web, read magazines or such other activity if we want detailed information about it. Consultations may be done online so we could be provided with a lot of options to choose from. It would serve as our guide on what are we going to bring, basically, on what we are going to need when we go peacock bass fishing.

It is usually found in the oceans of South America and Amazon. Its speed, strength, size and ferocious nature make it easy to hunt for prey. Similarly, to a largemouth bass with huge, bucket-like mouth, peacock bass do swallow up other fishes of smaller sizes at the same time for their meal.

Three species of these sport fish are found in the Amazon. Brazilian natives as the Cichla Temensis or the "tucunare azul or paca" know one species of the peacock bass. On the other hand, the Spanish-speaking communities consider them as "pavon azul or pinta lapa". This specie is very sensitive to water conditions and restricted to tropical areas of the Amazon. Its weight is estimated to have an average of 27 pounds.

The second specie is the Cichla Ocellaris, known as the butterfly peacock. Much smaller compared to the pace, it just weighs about 7 to 8 pounds, but they are terrible fighters, ready to engage in a fight for bait.

The third is the Cichla Nigrolineatus, or royal peacock. Its habitat is in fast moving waters and weighs an average of 3 to 4 pounds.

The seasonal cycle of the peacock bass is usually based on the equatorial weather conditions in the Amazon River. Typical of dry and wet seasons, the best time hunting for peacock bass is usually of the first six months of the year, where the water temperature is not so extremely hot.

For easier hunting, anglers are advised to have their bass fishing activities conducted on instances where different rivers in the South American continents reach the lowest water level.

Sports fisher can fish in the Amazon from December through March on the northern area, and from July through November in the southern area. On the black waters of the northwestern Amazonian rivers, however, December through March is the best peacock bass fishing because of the clear waters and the typical dry season, making sport fisher easier for them to hunt the 27-pound peacock bass.

One of the strategies of success in pursuing a peacock bass is the mastering of the fishing technique in relation to the behaviour of the fish. It is advised to at least improve everything an angler knows. B-F-S: Can you describe what type of lures a person should have if they want to catch Peacock Bass?

Paul: I?ve learned long a go never to tell someone that his favorite lure won?t work, because it?s almost an unwritten rule of fishing that the moment you say something can?t be done, someone will go and do it. That being considered however, we hook probably 90 percent of all the big peacocks we catch in a year on four principle categories of lures; propeller lures; stick baits; swimming plugs and peacock rattle jigs.

The most famous, of course, are the big, 6 or 7 inch prop baits. These are known from Luhr-Jensen?s (now defunct) ?Woodchoppers? and today?s Highroller ?Riprollers?. They catch good numbers of fish, generate spectacular topwater strikes and make for wonderful television; however, they are always productive. Certain water conditions may make them next to ineffective, so an angler must be armed with an array of alternative tools.

Stick baits, such as ?Zara Spooks? and ?Super Spooks? are especially effective early and late in the day, in small, still waters and in thick structure. Swimming plugs like Yo-Zuri?s ?Crystal Minnow or Cotton Cordell?s ?Redfin? are almost always effective and provide tired anglers with effortless fishing, albeit not nearly as productive as their subsurface counterpart, the ?Peacock Rattle Jig?.

B-F-S: With the understanding that conditions will tell you what lure you should use, and it can vary from time to time, but is there any one type of lure that is especially productive in catching these fish?

Paul: Absolutely. The ?Peacock Rattle Jig catches far more peacock bass than any other lure. Although it's a jig in every aspect of the word, the name is a bit deceptive since we don?t jig it. It never goes to the bottom. Instead we fish it as though we were stripping a fly, rapidly accelerating and then slowing again in a rhythmic, jerky motion in the top several feet of the water column. This lure is by far the most productive of all peacock bass lures and is effective in just about any conditions. Even better, their small, light easy to use and cheap ? you can even make your own. It only makes sense that you would want to seek out as much peacock bass fishing techniques as possible if you are fishing in Florida but especially if you are going to make the trip to the Peacock Bass capital of the world in South America. It doesn't hurt to be even more prepared for a great trip. No doubt you'll be with fishing guides that will make the process a whole lot easier but you can never learn too much on the subject.

First off the Peacock Bass typically feeds only during daylight hours. They rest during the night and thus are usually very inactive.

You will find most success in warm, slow flowing canals, ponds and lakes as they cannot tolerate water temps below 60 degrees F. And will frequently find them in the shady areas around bridges, culverts, canal intersections, bends and near fallen trees.

They are known to spawn and feed in shallow water so the most commonly used lure are variations of any top water poppers and crank baits. You'll want to use 6 to 8 inch sizes to go after the big ones. Couple these with a fast noisy retrieval to get them in a frenzy. Remember Peacock Bass will strike out of just being territorial so passing a big, noisy lure right past them should get the strike you're looking for.

Also don't forget that these fish are known for their ferocity and will strike with a destructive force. So make sure all your fishing tackle is of the heavy duty variety to be able to withstand the hits you most surely will get.

I don't know about you but when 17 years of experience offers up some Peacock Bass techniques, I'm all ears, soaking up as much knowledge as I can. You just don't come across that much experience and expertise often so we were jumping at the chance to ask Paul Reiss of Acute Angling to give us some tips and techniques we could share with all our visitors.

B-F-S: Any particular time of day or night that is most productive?

Paul: Peacocks are strictly diurnal feeders. That means they hunt and feed during daylight hours. Consequently, our guides head off fishing at sunup and return before sundown. Since our peacock bass fishery is essentially astride the equator, the sun rises at 6:30 AM and sets at 6:30 PM. Although peacocks are active and can be caught all day long, anglers tend to bog down around noon, when the powerful equatorial sun is at its strongest. So, lunchtime and a siesta are usually in order in the middle of the day. Considering all of this, the best bite is often between 8 and 10 AM and again between 2 and 4 PM. It?s nice to not have to get up ridiculously early when you?re on vacation.

B-F-S: Any tips or peacock bass techniques you can give our visitors that will help them when fishing for Peacock?

Paul: Here are three that will help prevent the disappointment of a lost trophy; Tie directly to the lure. Avoid snaps and leaders and other mumbo-jumbo. Every link in the chain connecting you to your quarry is simply one more thing that can go wrong. Keep it simple (and use a Palomar knot).When you hook a big peacock, try to convince him that nothing is wrong. This might sound silly, but it has a very useful effect. The gear I recommended is stout enough for fishermen to simply crank in small fish. But this won?t work with giant peacocks. A big specimen is strong enough to easily snap 65 pound braid. Anglers often try to use heavier line with a tightened drag to overcome this, but that simply leads to broken rods, straightened hooks or torn out lures. These fish are just too powerful for that kind of treatment.

So, after you hook up, if he hasn?t panicked yet, don?t make him do so. Don?t start hauling and cranking and getting furious, he?ll sense this and head for the hills. Instead, try to lead him gently by lowering your rod tip to one side of the boat and slowly recovering line, trying to convince him to swim along but always maintaining tension and a bend in the rod. When he gets close enough to see the boat, he will panic, but now he?s in your playing field, far from the safety of shoreline snags or flooded forest. Let him run (they usually don?t go too far) and repeat the process until he?s tired, when you can land him safely.
