Deep or Shallow?

Went to Jordan Lake, NC two weekends ago and the fishing surprised me a little.  With air temp over 100 and water temps at 90 I thought this will be interesting.  The fish didn’t seem to mind too much.  Best 5 went 15lbs with one around 5 ½.  Caught them many different ways.  Biggest came deep cranking around a bridge channel ledge as did many others.  Some came shallow cranking rip rap or stick ups.  Others came off bridge pilling on a drop shot.  Had a lot of fun.  I think I was about the only one on the whole lake fishing while there where several hundred pleasure boaters running around me.  It was funny seeing the pleasure boaters, many of which had a little too much to drink, out there cheering as they rode by me catching fish from around a bridge.  Just like many lakes in this area Jordan lake is small so during the summer it gets nuts out there with the jet skis and cruisers.

Randleman is another good lake which is about 2 hours from here, which opened up for the first time to the public Mar. 2010.  What a great fishery and I had the chance to go there last month and had a great trip.  I have heard reports of people having 100+ fish days during spring.  KVD actually was there this past May and whacked them from what I heard.  They were filming a TV show for Bass Pro Shops, so check that out once it airs.  When I was there a lot of fish were shallow due to some rains that came through which caused some current.  Any time during the summer you have a decent rain don’t be afraid to leave the deep areas and check shallower areas.  But rain or not, creeks with flowing water can hold fish throughout the summer.  Those areas have a lot of oxygen and with that comes baitfish.

Many of the competitors in the recent Bassmaster All-Stars championship caught their fish very shallow at Lake Jordan, AL and the Alabama River.  Edwin Evers was fishing so shallow he couldn’t get his boat back in the areas once the water fell slightly the last day.  While the majority of the fish this time of year may be deep, a shallow water pattern can win a tournament if deep fish scatter.  As the summer progresses the deep fish do not congregate as much as they do during the early summer.  Just check both to see what’s best.
